This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
